How to access my home computer from remote place?

Posted on 20:27 by Unknown

In this Tutorial we will be using Windows Remote Desktop Application to connect your home computer from remote place.

Basic Requirement:
You must login to your computer with administrator account or with administrator privileges
Home Router login details.
Internet Public IP (You can get this by searching what is my ip in google.com)

Step: 1
You need to enable remote desktop in both the computers:
Login in with Administrator Account
  1. Windows XP: Right click on My Computer on desktop > properties > Go to Remote Tab > Check both Remote assistance and remote desktop.
  2. Windows7: Click on start > Go to control panel > Open System > click on Advanced System Settings (Top - Left Hand side) > Go to Remote Tab> Check Remote assistance and here under Remote Desktop you have three options.
    • Don’t allow connection to this computer
    • Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (Select this one because you can also connect this computer from third party remote application)
    • Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication
Step: 2
Disable firewall in both the computers.

If you don’t wish to disable firewall then you need to Allow Remote Desktop Application

 Step: 3
  1. Consider from the above image DP computer as your Home computer and SP computer as Remote computer
  2. Login to your Home Router
    • Example: My router IP address is http://192.168.1.1 and my default username is admin and password is admin, so you can check with your ISP of your router IP and login detail
    • Note down your home computer static IP (192.168.1.x), Click here to know about seeing your computer IP address
    • Default Port for Windows Remote Desktop is 3389

  3. Configure Port Forwarding in your Home router.
    1. Search your router and model in  Images.google.com
      • For Example: “Linksys Remote Desktop Port Forwarding”, Now you will find related images about Port forwarding

    2. Enter the Port Forwarding details in your router
      • Enter the Name as Remote (Do not get confused, field names in various router may be “Start” or “Application” , If you don’t see this field then ignore this step.
      • Enter Ext Port as 3389 (Ext Port in different router may addressed as From Port, External Port, Public Port)
      • Enter To Port as 3389 (To Port in different router may addressed as Internal Port, Destination Port, Private Port)

    3. Enter your home computer IP Address
    4. Save and Exit

  4. Now you are done. You don’t have to configure office router or remote router.
Final Step:
In Your Home computer

Open Google.com

Type “What is my IP address”, Google will result your public IP address
Provide this Public IP address to remote person to connect your computer using Remote Desktop.

I will post about Team Viewer in next post.
